Start with condition. Ask what surveys have already been carried out on the vessel, when, and by whom. A consultant should be able to explain the difference between a hull survey, an engine survey and a rig inspection, and why a buyer might want all three before committing. Ask, too, what the survey is unlikely to cover, since no single inspection catches everything.

The two roles can sit within the same consultancy, working from shared knowledge of the vessel and the owner's preferences, or a client can choose to use different specialists for each. Neither approach is inherently better. It depends on how much the client values a single point of contact against specialist focus in each area.

The starting point is rarely the yacht. A yacht charter consultant begins with questions about the guests: how many people, what ages, what pace of holiday they want, whether the priority is quiet anchorages or lively ports, water sports or long lunches ashore. Only once that picture is clear does the conversation turn to which vessel and crew suit it.

Start with maintenance history. Ask to see logs covering engine hours, servicing intervals and any significant repairs, and ask specifically whether anything has been replaced recently versus simply serviced. A vessel with thorough, consistent records tells a different story from one with gaps, regardless of how it presents on the day.

A useful exercise is to total the expected annual weeks on board over a three to five year horizon and compare that honestly against the fixed and variable costs of ownership over the same period, set beside the cost of chartering the equivalent weeks. For many prospective clients, that comparison points clearly one way or the other. For others it stays close, and the decision comes down to how much value they place on having a fixed vessel of their own.
