How to Replace an audi car key replacement G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located near the transmission's edge over the flywheel gear. It sends a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated at the edges of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can activate spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails the ECU will throw the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing is a bit tricky as there are two different connector pins, and they have different functions but the most effective method of testing it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully operational, it should be reading approximately 1000 ohms. Examine for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll i had massive power loss like the engine is running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing any more. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked with gasoline and the 4th was dry. When I start the engine with no sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each of the injector holes, the 3 drenched with gazoline jump out but the 4th one stays closed. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I found zero ohm. I'm assuming the issue is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The audi car key will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it runs fine with the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not certain what to do, as i think i've pretty much eliminated everything else. But i am afraid i might have missed something. Please let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars which is why you can easily locate one at a junkyard or at a parts store. Testing them is easy to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). They must be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that has to know the speed and audi key fob not Working position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. To accomplish this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these go badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that could cause engine shut down.

If you are experiencing any of these problems, it is likely your sensor is going bad and needs replacing. The good news is they are very affordable and easy to find, especially in the case of the Bosch model, which is what we have. Alternatively, the GM version of this component is also a good choice.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine sensor could cause a number of problems in your vehicle. It is a crucial part of the Programming Audi Key's transmission because it communicates to the ECU about how the car's crankshaft is turning. When this sensor fails, it can affect the performance of the transmission as well as the other car's components.

The G5 engine sensor is located at the outskirts of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. It sends an electrical signal through gray wire to ECU pin T55/49. You can test the sensor for failure by examining the continuity between it and the tachometer. You should observe approximately 1000 ohms resistance between these two points.
