Origins

In the early days the ancestors of today's Koreans were capable of surviving by hunting and gathering wild foods. In all of them, Baekje was the most powerful state, but its dynasty ended by the fall of Goguryeo in 676 CE leaving Baekje with its southern territories of Manchuria and the western region around the Hwanghae Bay, while eastern Buyeo and the Gaya confederacy flourished for a short time.

The Unified Silla kingdom then emerged and the three kingdoms began to cooperate to expand their territories. Silla, with the help of the Chinese eventually conquered and unified the peninsula in 935.

As Korea is entering a post-crisis period its development model appears to be changing. People who are shocked by the enormous cost of the old system would prefer an extensive program of liberalization of capital as well as labor markets. On the other hand, those who support the old system are seeking to preserve it by leveraging nationalist sentiments and generating fear about job losses.

Policy and academic analysts are starkly divided as to the extent to which these two developments are driving Koreas development towards an entirely new model of economic governance. In South Korea, 26 percent of the population is Christian. Creationists have made strides in promoting their beliefs to this segment. Of the respondents, 41% stated that there was not enough scientific evidence to support evolution; 39% said the theory did not align with their beliefs; and 17% said it was difficult to understand. This level of disbelief is similar to that of the United States where a similar percentage do not believe humans evolved from lesser advanced types of life.

In the past, most of the anti-evolution movements in Korea was focused on educating college students and bringing them to Christ. In 1980, a four-day creation science seminar was held in Seoul during the World Evangelization Crusade. Drs. Henry Morris and Duane Giss of ICR were the featured speakers. This event drew a large audience of scientists, professors and church leaders.

The success of this event resulted in the founding of the Korea Association of Creation Research (KACR) on January 31st 1981. The event was widely covered in the national press, including The Korea Times, Chosun Ilbo and The Korea Times.

KACR started publishing a newsletter titled CREATION. In CREATION, the organization reported on its own activities and published articles about scientific evidence for creationism. It also translated a number of slides and film strips from ICR and also some books on creationism that were published outside of Korea. KACR members delivered lectures in churches and universities throughout the country.

One example of one KACR success story occurred at the KAIST university in Seoul. There, enough students were fascinated by the concept of creationism that they raised the money and support to construct a small museum on campus featuring creationist fossil models and other exhibits.

In addition to its public activities, KACR publishes a bimonthly news magazine called CREATION that covers topics related to creation science, and it has hosted a series of lectures by ICR staff. It has also created branches in local offices that give seminars and talks to schoolchildren and community groups.

Evolution in South Korea

In the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early 20th century, Korea began to adopt a more Westernized style of life. Wang Geon, a powerful local leader who defeated Gungye in 935 and unified Goryeo, Baekje, and Silla Later, he incorporated Baekje into Goryeo peacefully as a successor. Wang Geon also introduced fundamental reforms and strengthened the centralized ruling system. This marked the end of the Three Kingdoms period. The Korean peninsula was then ruled by the Goryeo Dynasty. In the Three Kingdoms period, Goguryeo, Baekje and Silla gradually grew to become powerful states in Manchuria and on the peninsula.
